What to bring and expect at your first class. Print E-mail

Feeling self conscious? Don’t worry about it! Everybody else in the class is new to yoga, and too busy thinking about themselves to look at everyone else… yoga is non competitive, so don’t feel compelled to push your body beyond it’s limits just to ‘keep up’, you get more out of yoga and yourself by listening to your body, respecting it’s current limitations and allowing it open and strengthen over time. If you have any injuries be sure to mention it when registering and be aware of them in your practice.
Have an open mind and relax, above all you should enjoy the class and feel great when you leave.

What should you wear? Your most comfortable clothes, preferably sports clothes, something with give or that’s loose. You need to move comfortably and freely, without being held back by your clothing. For the class you need to be in bare feet.
You will feel very warm during the class, but have something to hand for final relaxation, when you may feel a little cold.

What should you bring? Bring a yoga mat; it’s best to have your own for hygiene reasons. There will be a very limited number of spare mats available if you forget to bring one. Sticky Yoga mats are available to buy at most sports shops, department stores or even Boots! We also have a good quality Yoga Mat available to buy online - just click on 'yoga mats'. Bring a bottle of water and drink plenty before and after class. It’s best not to drink water during a yoga class, but if you really need to you of course can.

Some things to be aware of…. Don’t eat for at least an hour, preferably two, before a yoga class, it’s best to have an empty stomach to practice on. You should arrive in good time for a yoga class, so that you’re not rushed and have plenty of time to change and be sitting on your mat ready to begin when the time is right. As yogis, we should respect everyone around us by being on time, speaking softly and entering and leaving the room quietly, particularly if arriving late or leaving early. Please ensure your mobile phone is switched off before class.

I look forward to welcoming you to your first class, and hope you will find joy in your practice as I have!

Namaste,
Sarah.
